Relocation checklist

First 30 days in Surprise

Official starting points for the first month — utilities, trash, MVD, schools, heat, hospitals, and city hall. Confirm every link on the city or agency site before you act.

Week 1–2

Driver license & vehicle (ADOT MVD)

  • New-to-Arizona hub: azdot.gov — New to AZ
  • Expect an in-person visit for first AZ license/ID and registration; bring presence docs, prior license, SSN, and Arizona address proof (utility bill, etc.).
  • Maricopa County emissions may be required before registration — check ADOT before you sit in line.
  • After your first visit, activate AZMVDNow for renewals.
Before school starts

School registration

  • Most of Surprise: Dysart Unified School District (dysart.org)
  • Use Dysart enrollment / open-enrollment pages for current document lists (typically ID, birth certificate, proof of residency, immunizations).
  • District office historically listed at 15802 N Parkview Place, Surprise — confirm hours on dysart.org.
  • If your address is actually Peoria (e.g. some West Valley master-plans), verify Peoria Unified instead.
April–October

Heat reality

  • West Valley summers are long. Plan outdoor time early morning; midday White Tanks / Lake Pleasant hikes are unsafe most of June–August.
  • Ask for recent summer electric bills when you can — cooling is a real budget line.
  • Indoor backups: Surprise libraries, city rec, Oasis Swim Center (seasonal) — see Things to Do.
  • Never leave kids, pets, or deliveries in a parked car.
Save these

Hospitals & urgent care

  • Abrazo Surprise Hospital — 16815 W Bell Rd, Surprise, AZ 85374 · abrazohealth.com (24/7 ER; neighborhood hospital at Loop 303 & Bell)
  • Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center — 14502 W Meeker Blvd, Sun City West, AZ 85375 · bannerhealth.com (full medical center just north — labeled Sun City West)
  • For non-emergencies, ask the Facebook group which urgent-care clinics they’re using this year — hours change.
  • Call 911 for emergencies.
City of Surprise

City hall & residents hub

  • Official city site: surpriseaz.gov
  • Residents hub (utilities finder, trash, police/fire, code, seniors): surpriseaz.gov/31/Residents
  • Confirm City Hall address, hours, and permit counters on the city site — don’t trust outdated blog posts.
